Basseterre, St.Kitts (Team UNITY Communications) :-Team UNITY lead by Dr. The Hon. Timothy Harris met with a cross section of the Guyanese community at the St. Peters Community Centre on Sunday night 6th October. Along with Dr. Harris were fellow parliamentarians, Representative for constituency 8, of which St. Peters is a part, the Hon. Eugene Hamilton, the Hon. Shawn K. Richards and the Hon Sam Condor.
They were accompanied by other Unity candidates including Mr. Lindsay Grant, Mr. Ian "Patches" Liburd and Mr. Jonel Powell.
The meeting was organized by retired parliamentarian Mr. Dwyer Astaphan and Guyanese Honourary Consul Stanford Conway who were both in attendance.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Hamilton and addressed by himself along with Mr. Richards and Dr. Harris. Of particular importance were the remarks by Mr. Richards who put to rest a pernicious rumour that had been circulated by the outgoing DLP that he had made unsavory comments about “foreigners” on the political platform. This was based on an isolated statement taken out of context which dealt with the lack of training opportunities in the PEP program which failed to prepare youth for permanent employment.
Dr. Harris then discussed various policy proposals of the prospective government of National Unity regarding the obligations of St. Kitts and Nevis under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy including the removal of work permit fees.
His message was one of basic fairness to people who have chosen to make these islands their home both because of our treaty obligations and the fact that tens of thousands of Kittitians and Nevisians make their homes abroad and we all have experience of migration.
The meeting was well received by the crowd that came out to meet with and listen to the Unity team in defiance of efforts to discourage them from attending. This attempt at intimidation continued even during the meeting when a group of DLP supporters gathered in the yard of the community centre in a display of intimidatory behaviour; verbally abusing participants and taking photos of those who stood to ask questions. Despite these unfortunate efforts the meeting was not disrupted and participants were unafraid to ask questions.
Team UNITY’s next stop will be a massive Public Meeting and Rally on George Street, Newtown with UNITY PAM Candidate Ian “Patches” Liburd and the East Basseterre “Warriors” . Meeting takes place on Wednesday October 9th at 8pm.
Following Wednesday’s meeting will be a lunchtime meeting on Thursday October 10th at the CA P Southwell Industrial Site and then on Friday October 11th a massive “People Power” March and Rally starting at 4:30pm from the Greenlands and culminating at Bank Street.
