TEAM UNITY to introduce Universal Pre-school education. Admission fee to be removed

By: Team UNITY, Press Release

Basseterre, St.Kitts (Team UNITY Communications)  -- At the official Team UNITY event launch on September 26th Leader Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris announced to an estimated crowd of over 7,000 that the incoming historic UNITY Government will introduce Universal Access to Pre-School education in the federation.

In addressing the massive gathering Harris outlined the benefits and rationale of such a programme to the people of the federation.

“Our children are precious.  I believe the best gift that we can give to our children is the gift of education. Studies have shown that children who pass through Day Care Centres tend to be better prepared for further learning at primary and secondary levels.  Studies show that they tend overall to perform better and be more responsible in life,” said the Team UNITY Leader Dr. Harris.

The dynamic UNITY Leader continued “Tonight I propose that we remove the requirement of fees for the young children in our pre-schools.  This will be a major relief for parents but more importantly we are giving the young a head start in life.  This is a reasonable position because primary education and secondary education is relatively free.  At least there is no admission fee at these levels.  When we remove this admission fee from our pre-schools, we achieve equality of support at this level of education.”

A universal preschool program would ensure that quality preschool education is available to every child in the federation. Such a program would promote school readiness by providing all children with the early education necessary to begin school ready to learn. Studies of high-quality early childhood programs demonstrate that they are especially beneficial to children from economically disadvantaged households. In addition, a universal preschool system would help meet the growing demand for child care that stems from the increasing proportion of families that have both parents in the workforce.

Team UNITY heads into East Basseterre this evening Wednesday October 9th at 7:30pm for their first Public Meeting since the historic launch two weeks agon. The meeting is the first of a series of events for the week which includes a lunchtime Public Meeting at the C.A.P Industrial Site on Thursday at 12 noon and a massive “People Power” March and Rally on Friday starting from Greenlands at 4:30pm and culminating on Bank Street.
