BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH a view to implementing proposals emanating from the National Consultation on Crime held last month, Cabinet gave ear to recommendation for the implementation of a task force during its most recent convening.

Minister of State with responsibility for Education, Youth Affairs, Labour, Social Security, Information and Technology, the Hon. Nigel Carty, in presenting the January 5, 2009 post-Cabinet briefing said the proposal for the establishment of a task force was made by the Minister of National Security and Prime Minister of the Federation, Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas.

The task force, according to Minister Carty, would have the specific responsibility of implementing those recommendations tabled at the Consultation that was held at the Marriott Hotel on December 12, 2008.

“The task force will collate the recommendations of the consultation and will work with the government to have them implemented within specific timelines.”

The consultation saw recommendations and suggestions being tabled by politicians, the business sector, youth groups and other sectors of society.

The post-Cabinet briefing said these groups not only made recommendations but pledged their commitment and support for “the government’s improved crime-fighting strategy that will arise out of the recommendations of the consultation”.

According to the release, it is recommended that the task force should be comprised of representatives from the different ministries on St. Kitts and on Nevis and also persons from other sectors of society.

“Specifically, it is being recommended that the task force be comprised of members from the Ministry of National Security, the Ministry of Legal Affairs, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Education, corresponding ministries in the Nevis Island Administration, St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association, the Clergy, the Media Association, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Parent-Teachers Associations, and other civil society organisations and interest groups.” ~~Adz:Right~~
