Land opposite Pond’s Pasture not cleared for a National Park

By: Jenise Ferlance-Isaac, SKNVibes.com

    Green space being maintained

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE land opposite Pond’s Pasture covering the Basseterre Valley Aquifer is not being transformed into a national park as was rumoured, but is instead being maintained as a green space.

For some weeks rumours have been spreading that the land space, which is also situated opposite the Newtown Playfield, was being cleared for groundwork to begin on a national park but further details never surfaced.

SKNVibes contacted Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works Lenrick Lake, who informed that the area is a green space.

He said that because there is water under the land, there is not much that could be done on the land and so, for the sake of protecting the Aquifer, the area would be cleared, levelled and left alone.

"The area is just a green space. There is going to be some drainage development. They have to do some engineering work in that area so it was going to be cleaned anyway. But we just cleaned it ahead so we could start levelling," he explained.

Permanent Secretary said that the area was cleared some two weeks ago and they are now in the process of levelling the land.

He said that the work being done is to ensure there is proper drainage for the water to run off instead of settling in the road like it usually does.

Lake explained that the work is an extension to the drainage process currently being conducted on Sandown Road, and the second phase of it would be on the Frigate Bay Road right down into Newtown in the area where the playfield is located.

He added that it is being done so that water could better flow into the drain and lead into the ocean.

"We are going to widen the drains so that they can get more catchment area, so that it [water] can better lead down into the sea and to different areas."

Lake said that some of the water would also flow into the green space which would keep it lush.
