BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER a period of dormancy, the United National Empowerment Party (UNEP) is back in the political arena with the recent announcement of its intention to contest the 2009 General Elections.

The party issued a press release late yesterday in which it provided an apology to the public for its leave of absence and sought to dispel rumours that it was done away with. According to the release, the party is “alive and well”.

“We assure the general public of St. Kitts and Nevis and the world that UNEP is alive and well and that it has the will and ability to contest the 2009 General Elections.”

The release, authorised by the UNEP’s Public Relations Officer, Walford Arthurton, outlined the political party’s reason for the dormant spell and explained that it is now in a better position to contest the upcoming General Elections.

“We have been silent for a while because we believe that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis were not ready for a third party in St. Kitts.  In our formative stage, our presence in the political arena was not recognised as it should and so we felt it necessary to take time off so that the people of the Federation could get a first hand view of the ills taking place in the Federation.  It took some time but it has now been brought to light.”

Building on its belief in its ability to propel the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis forward, the UNEP has called on people of the land to “do what is good and right for this country and to call the UNEP to the reins of power”. ~~Adz:Right~~

“With the turmoil and problems that the country currently faces, the United National Empowerment Party (UNEP) believes it would be in the best position to efficiently and effectively handle the affairs of this our great nation, especially in light of the of the apparent inability of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) to do so...For years, we have seen and heard of the downward thrust of our country but with UNEP at the helm, we believe this country can be restored to its former glory.  We call on the CCM and NRP to be vigilant and watchful and be prepared to do what’s necessary in order to restore to the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis to the number one position in the Caribbean which it previously held.”

The UNEP, according to the press release, aims at remaining focussed in the face of adversity.

“Some folks believe they could buy out the executive members of the People’s Action Movement and destroy the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, but they will not succeed in destroying the United National Empowerment Party. We will not allow anyone to distract us. We have recouped and are now prepared to contest the 2009 General Elections.”

The release made no mention of specific candidates who will be contesting the 2009 General Elections but informed that “a subsequent press release outlining our future plans will be issued.”

The UNEP was established shortly before the 2004 General Elections under the leadership of prominent lawyer, Dr. Henry Browne.
