Leaders of India, Japan, Brazil and Germany in a unified bid for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council.

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JULY 12TH 2005
St. Kitts and Nevis is among a significant number of Caribbean States that have indicated support for the joint bid by Brazil, Japan, Germany and India for permanent seats on a reformed and expanded United Nations Security Council.
Caribbean Leaders at their meeting in St. Lucia last week, while noting that Member States are favourably disposed toward an expansion of the United Nations Security Council, had some conditions.

They are of the view that Security Council reform should not diminish the importance of the other aspects of the reform process, such as the development agenda, revitalisation and strengthening of the General Assembly and reform of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The Leaders indicated that a significant number of Member States are inclined to support the G4 Framework Resolution contingent on strong support for their development agenda as small, vulnerable states; inclusion of the proposals of the African Union in relation to expansion of the Security Council and acceptance of the principle of rotation of membership on the Security Council.

In this context, they requested CARICOM Permanent Representatives to the United Nations to work towards arriving at a common CARICOM position on the issue of UN Reform, monitoring developments closely and liaising with their Foreign Ministers, said the Communiqué issued at the end of the Summit.

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas said recently that  his Labour Party Administration that Japan, definitely deserves a permanent place in the reformed and expanded Security Council of the United Nations and we hope that that will be soon.

Japan, along with Brazil, Germany and India (G-4) has expressed interest in becoming members in an enlarged U.N. Security Council.

The G-4 nations are seeking to increase the number of Security Council seats to 25 from the current 10 by adding six new permanent members and four new non-permanent members.
