Richards says boundary changes will not hurt him

Shawn Richards, Parliamentary Representative for Constituency # 5, Sandy Point
ST. KITTS – 11TH JANUARY, 2009 - The Parliamentary Representative for Constituency # 5, Sandy Point, says he is not perturbed by rumours that attempts are being made to change boundaries in his constituency.

Shawn Richards, the lone parliamentarian from the People’s Action Movement in St. Kitts says he does not believe that any change to the boundaries in his constituency would affect his chances of retaining his seat in the House.

“I went into the last general elections saying to all persons who were listening to me that at the end of the day, Shawn Richards will be victorious. I am going into the next general elections, saying the same thing…”

Richards added, “Apart from doing the work and the canvassing that is necessary (to win), my record is there and it speaks for itself. The people of Sandy Point are quite satisfied and I am quite certain that come the next general elections, they will vote for Shawn again.”

Richards said he believes that this general election will sweep a new government into office.

He added that as far as he is concerned, boundaries do not change, but people change and that the change has swung in the direction of the People’s Action Movement (PAM).

“Boundaries do not change; persons change and already the vast majority of citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis are saying to you they are ready for change.”  ~~Adz:Right~~

The 36-year old says the constitution of the Federation gives guidelines as to how and when constituency boundaries should be changed and any attempts to change it now would not only be illegal but would also be tantamount to disrespect for Kittitians.

“What the government is also saying to persons is that they have no respect for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and also for the different political parties and persons contesting the elections.”

“That cannot be fair to the candidates and it cannot be fair to the citizens, who ultimately are the ones we have to report to,” the PAM politician said.
