BVI Senior Fire Officers Trained In Supervisory Course In The UK

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 22nd, 2013 - Six Senior Fire Officers of the Rescue and Fire Fighting Service (RFFS) at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport have returned to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) after completing an extensive Supervisor Initial Course in the United Kingdom (UK).

     


    The training course, which was held from September 20 through October 5, was conducted at the International Fire Training Centre of the Serco Group based in the UK and was designed for personnel who will undertake the responsibility of supervisors.

    The Board of Directors, Management and Staff of the BVI Airports Authority extended hearty congratulations to the participants Messrs. Kensley Samuel, Michael Hastick, Melborne Tyson, Richard Penn, Harris Legair and Delano Prince for successfully attaining their certification at the Supervisory Level.  They all presently qualify as Watch Commanders. 

    The course objectives included demonstrating through simulation, the ability to manage an incident to its safe and successful conclusion and to plan training in accordance with International Regulations. It provides advance instruction in Command and Control principle and the day to day management requirements of the Rescue and Firefighting Service.  Firefighting personnel must be educated in technical, personnel and cognitive areas. 

    BVI Airport Authority, Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Lorrie George, said , “In order for any aerodrome to receive its license to operate, the Rescue and Firefighting Service must have competent personnel within its structure, in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Overseas Territory Aviation Regulations (OTARS) 140.” 

    Acting Managing Director, Ms. Diana Maduro, added, “As the BVI Airports Authority strives to fulfill its mission of developing and operating a safe, efficient and economically viable system of airports within the Virgin Islands, it has mandated its commitment to train its employees to meet internationally accepted standards, as the Authority is governed according to the regulatory body Air Safety Support International (ASSI).”
