October 22nd, 2013  -- The Government of the Virgin Islands is sad to learn of the passing of former Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Deputy Speaker and Territorial-at-Large Representative Honourable Reeial George, a stalwart whose commitment to many aspects of development in this Territory and the advancement of Virgin Islanders cannot be overstated.

Mr. George has made significant contributions to affect major changes in this Territory. For example, he lent his support to the participation of women in the Legislative Council and was an instrumental voice and champion for the lowering of the voting age from 21 to 18 years.

He contributed to the establishment of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College; the expansion of the road network; the construction of the Beef Island Bridge; and the development and expansion of airports in the Territory.

Additionally, he was a staunch supporter for the improvement of health facilities and school education and infrastructure. He also supported port development and the enhancement of water and electricity supply throughout the Territory.

As the first Virgin Islander to serve with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, Mr. George was a jack-of-all-trades who was also a member of the Architects and Engineers Association and a founding member of the Virgin Gorda Lions Club.

No doubt, there is indeed a huge story remaining to be written about his unwavering commitment to these Virgin Islands.

He dedicated his life to placing the needs of the public above his own. Mark 10:45 states: “Even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others.” And, this is the mantle and candle Mr. George carried and we thank him for touching our lives in myriad ways.

May God continue to give his family and all those left to mourn his passing the wisdom, courage and strength to go forward during this difficult period of sadness.
