BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHILE many have praised Dr. Terrance Drew for comments he made on the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) political platform last Thursday (Oct. 17), his political rival and Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Number Eight has ridiculed him by stating that all he has done is placed his foot snuggly in his mouth.
According to Drew, Constituency Number Eight has been on “life support” since his predecessor Cedric Liburd lost the St. Christopher Eight seat in 2010. He also expressed that it has low blood pressure, was in intensive care and near death.
He added that hope for the constituency came alive after he was named candidate for the SKNLP for that area.
Hamilton however expressed that if Drew’s comments were purposed to cast “a shadow” on him as the current Parliamentary Representative, he has failed to do so and was successful in casting a shadow on the government that he (Drew) supports.
“When he says the constituency was on life support, what does that mean? His government is in power. The constituency’s life support or whatever he thinks he wants to call it is based on the government in power. Because when you elect a government, you elect a government for all of the people. You can’t elect a government for those who get elected. If that is his comment…that because Cedric Liburd was not elected Constituency Eight was not getting any support…(it) means he is agreeing that the government that was elected was not elected to serve Constituency Number Eight.”
Hamilton said Dr. Drew’s comments are a reflection of his inexperience and gullibility.
“Dr. Drew’s comments show his naivety, it shows his inability to comprehend that when you elect a government, you elect a government to serve all of the people of each and every constituency. The fact no one is elected in a constituency who is in the executive branch of government, should not render that constituency ineligibile of receiving the benefits that other constituencies benefit from.”
Further drawing from Drew’s comments/analogy, Hamilton said it stands to reason that the only constituencies that are currently being supported by the sitting Labour Administration.
“And so if his comments are that Cedric Liburd was not elected and so the government has abandoned Constituency Number Eight because Cedric Liburd was not elected, I would agree with him that his Labour Government has shown that it is a government only of constituencies where people are elected.
“It also suggests that what would happen is not that his Labour Government is only representing four constituencies, Constituencies Six, Four, One and Two…only those constituencies would benefit from the conduct of the government. That’s what he’s saying.”
