Guyanese and Jamaicans will not be fooled by Douglas Election Gimmick says Dr. Timothy Harris

By: Team UNITY, Press Release

Basseterre, St.Kitts (Team UNITY Communications):-The latest election gimmick announced by the outgoing Prime Minister to provide a desk to look after the immigration affairs of Guyanese has been slammed by Unity Leader as “too little too late.”

“In his desperation to curry favour and fool voters, he is belatedly remembering that Guyanese and non-nationals are suffering indignities.  These indignities were perpetuated by Dr Douglas himself,” said the Unity leader, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris.

Dr Harris, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade continued, “Dr Douglas does not truly care.  He wants to use the non-nationals and discard them after elections.  We in Unity have outlined our policies geared at improving the lot of non-nationals.

Our policies emanate from our natural sense of justice for all and our vision of CARICOM people as one people entitled to share in a common space under the CSME.  In this regard, we are committed to fair treatment of our kith and kin from Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the wider Caribbean region.

We will end the discrimination against them in their efforts among other things to:

Access our educational institutions and we will remove punitive charges for non-nationals at CFBC.
Access to health services at the JNF Hospital
Purchase property. Land Holding Licenses will be waived

We will also work with other governments to ensure that the policies which we pursue are reciprocated to our nationals in other CARICOM member states.”

The voters in St. Kitts and Nevis will not be bribed by last minute expedient proposals of the government.  The government had 18 years to make adjustments but offered no meaningful support to Guyanese, Jamaicans, Trinidadians, etc.

Indeed Dr Douglas himself masterminded the hasty exit of Ramsamooj out of St. Kitts on the grounds that in past elections he was helping PAM. Today Ramsamooj is handsomely rewarded to provide propaganda support to Dr Douglas.  Douglas has no principle and is being hypocritical and self-serving in his approach.”
