BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (St. Kitts Branch) - located on the corner of Fort and Central Streets - is currently closed to the public as the effort to recover from an early-morning fire is underway.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services, FSO Lennox Griffin, explained to SKNVibes that at about 3:42 a.m. today (Oct. 24), a unit responded to an alarm which was activated at the RBTT.
He explained that on arrival it was observed that the building was filled with smoke but they could not have gained access until RBTT’s Basseterre St. Kitts Branch Area Vice President Corliss Charles-Sutton arrived on the scene.
Griffin said when the officers entered the building, they found the room that houses the Automated Teller Machine and the security system was on fire and they quelled it with a fire extinguisher.
Asked about the cause of the fire, the PRO explained that it seemed to have originated from an air condition unit, but it is still not clear whether the fault was electrical or frictional.
Persons who would have visited the establishment between the hours of 8:30 and 10:00 this morning had met the area cordoned but they were still able to conduct their business.
SKNVibes spoke briefly with Charles-Sutton, who said the decision was taken to open the doors of the establishment – if but for a short period – to accommodate the customers but the rest of the day is being spent preparing the premises for business tomorrow.
She said experts are working to establish an estimate of the damage caused by the fire.
