BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SEPTEMBER 19, 2013 was an unforgettable day for the Wilson family because while the most were enjoying the Independence celebrations, they were greeted with news that one of their relatives was involved in an accident that left him paralysed from the neck down.
Quincy ‘Tooseman’ Wilson of Cayon was rushed to the Joseph N. France General Hospital sometime after 8:00 that evening after the vehicle he was driving collided with a concrete fence.
Since then he has been hospitalised and, in addition, to being paralysed. This publication understands that the 35-year-old’s breathing is machine-assisted.
His sister Narissa of Ottley’s Village has launched a campaign to garner assistance for him to receive the treatment he needs.
In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes, the concerned sister explained that after being told by a physician that there is nothing that could be done for her brother locally, she took to the internet and her searches led to Trinidad. And after communicating with an individual there, and after his file sent thereto, she was sent an estimation of the cost of the procedure(s) which he would need.
“I spoke with persons at Consolidated Medical Management Ltd. in Trinidad and I got a quotation two weeks later and the price is US$250 000 or approximately EC$675 000. They said they can stabilise his breathing and stabilise his neck. He needs those because of the fractured discs in his neck. It would not deal with the fact that he is paralysed but it would allow him to breathe on his own.”
With the gargantuan task of amassing EC$675 000, the devoted sister told SKNVibes that she has solicited the assistance of Ministers of Government, businesses, banks and the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF), among others, and even if the responses were favourable they would not be enough to deal with the enormous estimate.
One month and days have passed since Narissa has launched her campaign and she has reported to this publication that some assistance was promised by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development and Health.
Though grateful, she declared that it is still a far cry from the estimated price of the procedure(s) and noted that she would be more than grateful for assistance from others.
As was explained to this media house, although paralysed from the neck down and not withstanding that he cannot speak, Wilson is fully conscious and communicates with those around him.
“He can’t speak but you can read his lips and understand what he is saying. He is communicating…I would like to get him overseas to get medical care. I am really seeking financial assistance here in St. Kitts and I am not getting anywhere. I would be very grateful…”
Through the ordeal, Narissa said she is trusting in God to see her brother and their family through.
