ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 29th, 2013 – The British Virgin Islands (BVI) Ports Authority continues to perform in line with its 2013 theme: ‘Growth’, through training and development of its personnel. To that end, 25 officers have recently been certified in First Aid and CPR.

The officers attended training on September 17 and 18; both sessions were facilitated by the BVI Red Cross’ Mr. Rudolph Lewis.

The recently trained employees include Shinika Mercer, Ama Hodge, Barbara Rodriguez, Oral Wilson, Augustine Mark, Myrtle Benjamin, Stephanie George, Darryl Frett, Vernon Stevens, Byron Hazel, Oswald King, Sean Durrant, Aisha Richards-Skelton, Miriam Mark, Calma Mactavious, Ainsley Bobb Jr., Carol Mickle, Konrad Ramsay, Erline Donovan, Sharene Springette, Kevin Maynard, Shelly Pemberton, Derick Barzey, Jeremie Walters and Denet Callwood.

Commenting on the First Aid and CPR training, Managing Director Mr. Claude Skelton-Cline said, “Many of the officers trained are front line personnel who engage with the public regularly. It’s good to know that they are better equipped with the skills necessary to help out in the event of an emergency. I am proud of them and encourage them to continue to pursue other avenues towards both personal and professional development.”

In explaining the meaning behind the Authority’s theme, Mr. Skelton-Cline said, “At the BVI Ports Authority, we are heavily focused on growth; whether it be growing our bottom line or growing our employees. This is why training and development of officers is of utmost importance as we acknowledge that they are the lifeblood of the organisation.”

BVIPA Human Resources Manager Ms. Sophia Cupid said that she received positive feedback from the employees who participated, adding, “I am happy that they had an enjoyable time while they learned essential skills that can benefit their own personal development, but more importantly, help save someone’s life.” Ms. Cupid said training is ongoing at the BVIPA and shared that officers will receive Customer Service Training, offered by the BVI Tourist Board early next month. The BVI Ports Authority is charged with facilitating the safe, efficient and effective operation of the related cargoes and passengers transiting the BVI’s seaports.
