St. Lucia, October 31st, 2013 -- Within days of the 2006 general election that surprised the St Lucia Labour Party and moved them over to the opposition benches, the ghost of labour to return to power may have given the blessings -- in accordance with the mantra to “take our country back.”
In so doing, they narrowly managed to take the country back on November 28, 2011, with a mythology of “Better Days” to their utter surprise. Since then, it hasn’t been easy to content hungry souls – ghostly or otherwise -- with a huge appetite for their reward of service.
During their term in purgatory (2006-2011), not a day would go by without some bravado, countless talk show antics and phone bank of spin doctors, protests of some sort, market step meetings and press releases, more frequent than a New York hour laundromat. Yet today, they have very little appetite to stomach a miniature episode of their own indulgence.
Little could they have anticipated that a robust and centrist party with practical ideas – the LPM – would hold serve and live up to expectation. And little could they discern that it would be a greater problem dealing with the gods that rarely fall asleep!
The events leading up to October 2013 in Saint Lucia are mesmerizing. From gruesome murders, home invasions, to “suicide in police custody,” police shooting, at-home suicides, to machete attacks, indescribable road collisions, mysterious house fires, skull and bones surfacing near a river and missing persons, are all intolerable and altogether unfamiliar to a people of known tranquility.
Suddenly, it seems that the ghost of labour was perhaps more potent during the month of October? Defying all odds, including the confession and absolution by the perpetrators from original sin that perhaps is holding the island besieged.
It is as if Halloween is much too real. And came much too soon!
Acute as the situation is in Saint Lucia today, the silence of the justice ministry, homeland security and other senior government officials is even more alarming.
Not even a public appearance of some competence to offer a solution is forthcoming, despite all the anxiety while in opposition and a mothballed blueprint for growth that was sold to the people of Saint Lucia. More importantly, while the ghost of labour is mesmerizing the population, life seems normal for the cabinet of ministers and their acolytes.
Seriously, all law abiding citizens and the good souls of Saint Lucia would like to be delivered from this painful ordeal.
But as the saying goes -- Le même bâton qui a battu le chien noir est le même bâton qui va battre le chien blanc. (“The same stick that beat the black dog is the same stick that will beat the white dog.”)
Sadly, the ghost of labour has run too far down the road for the perpetrators to catch, and in the process, unforeseen damage has been done.
But while citizens hope that the worse will soon be over, vast human capital, political capital and economic capital is going to waste, due to the arrogance and antics of hoodwink leadership.
The need is unimaginable, but the people ought not to wait -- and come together to gather the courage; to muster the willpower and to cast the ghost of labour to whence forth it came. And to begin changing the hearts and minds for the good of mankind!
There is much to do and many more surprises to come. But the will-power of the people is the greatest resource to cast unwanted spells of deceit and double dealings never seen in the history of Saint Lucia.
This journey will require the collective strength of character. The strength of mind and self-discipline to begin the game change, and to eventually achieve redemption from the ghost of a St Lucia Labour Party and its socialist brand of governance!
