Basseterre, St. Kitts (March 01, 2004): In continuance with the policy to empower citizens and improve the standard of living, a proposed advisory committee was formed to review the current structure of the minimum wage for hotel, restaurant and casino employees.

The body, which comprises government officials and representatives of employee and employer associations, met at the Department of Labour’s conference room earlier today.

Official sources told SKNIS that the wages of hotel, restaurant and casino workers and current conditions of employment are included in the focus area of the committee.

At the inaugural meeting, the committee chairman Cliffird Thomas outlined the Terms of Reference of the advisory committee and allowed members the opportunity to review the Labour Minimum Wage Act. Chairman Thomas, who also serves as the Labour Commissioner, at the end of the meeting described the session as fruitful and informative. He thanked the attendees for their contribution thus far and commitment to serve in the future.

The labour commissioner added that he looks forward to continuing the review process thus aiding the upliftment of the workers.

The proposed committee is scheduled to meet again next week.
