CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - THE Book Party hosted by the St. John’s Primary School, the Flats Coal Hill on Nevis, could become an annual affair. This is according to the school’s principal, Adina Taylor.
Speaking with SKNVibes yesterday (Jan. 14), Taylor said she was so impressed with the response to the party that she is considering making it the first of many.
Yesterday’s Book Party, part of the week of activities for the school’s first anniversary, was aimed - according to Taylor - at getting students to read in a comfortable atmosphere. The principal explained that the students “really enjoyed it”.
The Book Party, brainchild of parent Shelly Liburd, saw resource personnel from the Public Library, the Resource Centre of the Education Department, the Charlestown Primary School Library and Nevis Disaster Preparedness Office, as well as private citizens.
The party got underway after an opening ceremony which included remarks from Christine Springette, on behalf of the Premier and Minister of Education, the Hon. Joseph Parry; Palsy Wilkin of the Department of Education; and Theon Jones, on behalf of his father, retired teacher Anthony Jones.
According to Taylor, the school also received favorable responses from parents and at least one business house to the request for book or other donations towards the event. She said that even though the party is over, she is hopeful that other businesses that were contacted would come forward.
The week of observances culminates tomorrow (Jan. 15) with a Fun Day and luncheon at the school’s premises.
