Communities support Cardin Home’s Family Fun Day

Spiderman gives candy to the children

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - DESPITE a smaller than expected crowd due to inclement weather, members of various communities turned out yesterday (Nov. 2) at the LIME ground to support the Family Fun Day fundraiser for the Cardin Home.

The fundraiser was organised by the Clinical Student Association of the Windsor University School of Medicine in an effort to raise funds to upgrade the Cardin Home.

Several stations were erected on the ground with adventures ranging from painting, colouring and temporary tattoos to paintball shooting.

While the children enjoyed the bouncing castles, rocking horses and colouring, adults took advantage of the shooting range which was fitted with targets and prizes, compliments St. Kitts Paintball Experience.

Adults and children also flocked the Artwork station, where they were 'inked' with Henna temporary tattoo. Traditionally used at Hindu weddings and festivals, patrons were able to choose from a variety of Indian designs that were then artistically drawn on any part of the body desired. The design would fade away after a few days.

The children also took advantage of the face painting artwork. They walked away from the station one by one with butterflies, tigers, clowns, Spiderman and a host of other designs painted onto their faces.

Raffles took place on several occasions throughout the Fun Day.

While the adult winners were awarded tickets for Saddle Hill Adventure Park, coupons for free sandwiches at Subway and alcoholic beverages (compliments Vibes Beach Bar), the children were given children's books and paint kits from Harpers.

The highlight of the event was the visitation of Dore and Spiderman who gave the children candy and chocolate. Some screamed and cheered in delight while many of the younger ones fearfully ran to their parents.

The children were also given the opportunity to have their photos taken with the characters and the adults capitalised on this as well.

Speaking with the President of the Clinical Student Association of Windsor University, Bobby Korah, he told this publication that while the turnout was not as expected, he was pleased to see those who did attend the event had enjoyed themselves.

He explained that they are grateful for whatever funds they were able to raise, adding that the Association would hopefully be making the presentation of wall fans and adults diapers to the Cardin Home in early December.

Cardin Home is a health care facility that caters to the elderly. It is situated on Cardin Avenue in The Village and the residents there are provided four meals per day.

The home was established in May 1927 when James D. Cardin had donated the land upon which it sits to the government of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The home consists of nurses, orderlies and supervisors who care for the residents that dwell in two wards; one for each sex. It also comprises a kitchen, laundry room, dining area and a grassy field that surrounds the building.

For recreation, residents watch television, read, listen to the radio and interact with each other. There are regular church services on Sundays with an occasional outing to the beach or park.
