BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - NINE-TIME Culturama Kaiso King 'King Meeko' is giving consideration to participating in this year's Sugar Mas' Calypso Competition scheduled for late next month.
Prepared to draw his kaiso sword with the likes of some of the best calypsonians on Nevis, Clefton 'King Meeko' Warner released two songs - 'The Darkest Hour' and 'Sing to Win' - but was unable to contend because of circumstances beyond his control.
While conversing with SKNVibes, King Meeko expressed that he has been approached by a number of his fans with requests to compete in Sugar Mas' 42. And now, serious contemplation is at work.
"I thought about it. To be honest, I haven't made a decision as yet but I am seriously thinking about it. I give myself until about weekend or so. I definitely think my fans would appreciate if I competed, especially those fans in St. Kitts. I have a large following in St. Kitts and those in Nevis would surely come down and support. So I would be in my comfort zone still. Definitely, I would be happy to do that..."
King Meeko participated in the National Carnival Calypso Monarch Competition in 2005 and captured the First Runner-up position with King Konris being declared the winner. And since then he has not contested another such competition.
"The songs are not bad. Once you scrape through, you are in, so even if I am the last to be selected, once I'm in, I'm in. But I think I am good enough to make it. I have competed just the one time I came down and I came First Runner-up and I have not returned since that. I think it would be a good thing for me and for the people of Nevis on a whole to be at that level of competition. I will definitely make a decision at least by Monday."
Should he decide to compete, King Meeko said he would probably just use one of the two aforementioned songs and another.
If his lyrics mirror his performance and stage presence, King Meeko – undoubtedly – would be a force to be reckoned with.
“ah come back again to hu’t dey head.
some ah dem done t'ink 'dat ah was dead dead dead dead
Go tell them for me, dey grave can't hold me
An' ah got me eyes on me monarchy…”
The 15-time crown winner has penned songs such as ‘Nevis Nice’, ‘Nevis Still Nice’, ‘After Sugar’ and ‘My Country’.
