Basseterre, St. Kitts (July 21, 2005): Representatives of the Ministry of Culture, as well as various cultural groups, were briefed on the functioning of the OECS Cultural Network and its benefits, at a meeting at the Alliance Francaise on Wednesday evening.
The cultural network, slated for a September launch, was designed to establish a communication network in the OECS, enhance visibility of the OECS cultures on the Internet and provide cultural alternative models for the people of the region.
The project began in 2002 and more than 60 participants from the OECS and the French Departments of Martinique and Guadeloupe have been registered thus far.
The cultural organizations are grouped into five categories with emphasis on the creative, technical, management, educational and heritage aspects of operations.
Deb Andrews, director of CPMD the Tortola-based company charged with designing the web portal for the network addressed the local cultural practitioners at the meeting and indicated that she will design three websites.
The first is an intranet, which is going to be a private network whereby project participants can log in and upload their products, services, news and data online. The intranet will serve as a link for St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Antigua, St. Lucia, Grenada and St. Vincent.
Much of the information will then be posted on the extranet, which Andrews described as a window to the world. The extranet will be developed into a French and English website and will be marketed heavily by CPMD. Visitors to the extranet will be directed to the individual groups site for further viewing.
Persons described the meeting as highly informative and displayed an eagerness to get online with the OECS Cultural Network.
