Team Unity Makes Case For New Direction

By: Team UNITY, Press Release

    Our Country Deserves Better

Basseterre, St.Kitts (Team UNITY Communications):- Team Unity held a very successful public meeting on the front lawns of Mansion Village on Wednesday 13th November 2013. A highly energized crowd from across St. Kitts and Nevis endured intermittent shower spells, to hear the enthusiastic and visionary team on the Unity platform.

The speakers all got the crowd engaged and involved. The speakers were Ian “Patches” Liburd – Unity Candidate for East Basseterre, Hon. Eugene Hamilton – Unity Candidate for Constituency 8, Hon. Sam Condor – Unity Candidate for West Basseterre, Hon. Shawn Richards – Unity Candidate for Sandy Point and Figtree, Dr. The Hon. Timothy Harris – Unity Leader and Unity Candidate for Constituency 7. Apologies were received from Lindsay Grant – Unity Candidate for Constituency 4, who was overseas and Jonel Powell – Unity Candidate for Central Basseterre, who had emergency surgery.

The UNITY candidates  dealt with very significant issues impacting the people such as high cost of electricity and failure of the government after 8 years of talk to bring Wind and Geothermal Solutions to the country. Electricity cost was a major handicap for businesses and individuals yet the illegitimate Douglas regime has failed to provide practical solutions.

Team Unity slammed the government for its health care policies that were adding to the woes of the poor. In particular members expressed deep concern that Hon. Marcella Liburd as Minister of Health had introduced a fee to be paid by patients that had an accident or emergency. This is the first time in living memory that such a burden has been placed on the citizens and residents.

The tragedy of patients at JNF and other hospitals having to resort to sending friends and family  outside of the hospital  to buy medication for the nurses to treat them was also discussed. Additionally, the failure of the government to maintain the Mary Charles Hospital in proper physical condition . In particular  the absence of an ambulance service .

Speakers addressed the denial of $16 million in terminal payments to former sugar workers and reaffirmed the Team Unity’s commitment to pay all former sugar workers their amounts.

The bankruptcy of the country by Douglas, the severely high public debt, the high cost of living, the unemployment, and undermining were also addressed.

Team Unity promised to put the country back to work again and to end victimization and enter a new chapter of democracy and development.
