BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – YOUNG persons aiming to make a difference and unafraid of responsibility can now apply to be the Federation’s Commonwealth Youth Ambassador (CYA).

According to outgoing CYA Tavo Sargeant, interested youth should send profiles containing biographical information, academic history and involvement in extracurricular and volunteer activities to the Department of Youth.

Once selected, the candidate will serve a minimum two-year term and will represent the Federation at many regional and international Commonwealth Youth Meetings. 

Sargeant revealed that applicants would be assessed on their participation in youth activities and their contribution to youth development in St. Kitts and Nevis.

 “We are looking for someone who has been intensely involved in local youth development and has an understanding of who the Federation’s youth are, what they want and how they interact with one another.

“The Ambassador has to be able to eloquently outline the concerns and views of the local youth population in regional and international arenas and must be willing to undertake projects issued to them by the Commonwealth Youth Secretariat,” he said.
The current CYA stated that the position was “eye-opening” and “a learning process in which connections could be made and exposure to different cultures could be gained”. 

He also gave some insight into upcoming CYA activities including the establishment of a National Youth Council, the celebration of Commonwealth Week in March and the “Be Seen, Be Heard, Be Known” project, which aims to highlight the efforts of positive young people involved in nation-building.

Sargeant’s tenure ends in May and the application process is expected to last until then. Persons between the ages of 15 and 27 are eligible to apply.
