BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - UNLIKE his older brother who was handed a 12-year custodial sentence for a robbery offence, Trevis Henville was given a “suspended sentence” and a warning to make positive changes in his life and avoid having to make any appearances before the Federation’s courts, especially in the near future.

Trevis and his brother Esrette were jointly charged with robbing Khali Pitt of Carifesta Village on October 12, 2007. Esrette pleaded not guilty to the charge but was convicted unanimously by a 12-member jury.

Trevis pleaded guilty to the charge and appeared before the court yesterday (Jan. 20) when sentence was passed.

On the previous day, a probation officer spoke on Trevis’ behalf and informed the court of his willingness to change but also highlighted the negative influences with which the young man has to grapple, especially since he lives in an area that is known for “notorious activity” - Newtown.

The officer told the court that the office for which he works is not in a position to offer the kind of probationary services Trevis would require should he be placed on probation.

When asked if he has anything to say before sentencing, Trevis said, “I’m sorry”.

Presiding judge, Justice Francis Belle told Trevis he is sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour but explained that the sentence is only to be carried out if he, within the next three years, is convicted of an offence which is punishable by in excess of six months imprisonment. Should this occur, the sentence imposed on the court would take effect.

Justice Belle admonished the young man to take a serious look at his life with a view to making positive changes to his behaviour.

Trevis was also reminded by his Lordship to, during his day to day life, be aware of repercussions of being found guilty of contravening the law.
