BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – KIMO LIBURD, the man convicted for causing the death of two-year-old Janiah Johnson, was earlier this week sentenced to serve one year at Her Majesty’s Prison.

Police said in a release that the Lodge Project resident was sentenced to one year imprisonment but a quarter of it would be deducted “as suspended sentence”.

“As a condition, if after six (6) months from his release from prison Kimo Liburd commits any offence within the specified time he will serve the remaining quarter (1/4) of the suspended sentence in prison,” the release added.

It also stated that Liburd was disqualified from having a driver’s licence for five years, and should he wish to drive again he would have to undergo an extensive driving test in order to obtain a valid licence.

Little Janiah was the Federation’s first road fatality for 2012, having been involved in a February 19 traffic accident along the Kim Collins Highway.

Information reaching SKNVibes at that time indicated that the incident occurred at approximately 7:10 p.m. on the day in question.

The child’s father, Boris Johnson of Parray’s Village, was driving motorcar P1714 which was travelling in the direction of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank when it collided with motorcar P1436, driven by Kimo Liburd of Lodge Project.

Janiah’s mother, Alexia Johnson, was also a passenger of P1714 at the time of the collision.

All were reportedly transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital, and while the adults suffered cuts and bruises, little Janiah fought for her life for hours before succumbing to her injuries.

An autopsy performed on the body of little Janiah on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 revealed that death was as a result of “head trauma as a consequence of a motor vehicle accident”.
