BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH the growing anticipation of Sugar Mas 42 in the air, dozens of youths trampled through the streets of downtown Basseterre on Friday afternoon (Nov 23) during the Annual Costume Parade to welcome the launch of Carnival 2013.
It was indeed a sight to see as hundreds of spectators began to pour into the heart of the ‘Sugar City’ to have a sneak peak of the many expected costumes and the riveting performances of Carnival.
The parade, as usual, opened with frolicking masqueraders, mummies and mock-a-jumbies dressed in their cultural attire; dancing to the fancy of drummers and to the delight of many onlookers, including children who gathered around them.
As the performers concluded their acts on the streets, gyrating to the sounds of local music was the spectacle of young children depicting nature’s wonders, such as various species of butterflies and the different rainfalls of the island.
This was certainly a sight to see at the western end of the Old Treasury Building, as each child displayed their costume with full effect to the crowd which applauded their every motion.
As the diminutive parade came to a close and darkness of the night slowly crept in, winners in a number of preliminary competitions leading up to the Launch were all awarded with their prizes.
The Launch was also graced with the introduction of the astonishing beauties contesting for the titles of National Carnival Queen and Miss Talented Teen 2013.
“Long awaiting” was the response of Cyril ‘Puntan’ Webster Pringle, an enthusiastic carnival and sports person, after he was declared Sugar Mas’ 42’s Grand Marshal; a position he pointed out he is happy to embrace.
