Internationally, the month of March is being commemorated as Nutrition Month and will see countries all over the world carrying out various activities in order to encourage individuals to become more nutrition- conscious.
In St. Kitts and Nevis, Nutrition Week will achieve this purpose since it’s objective is to: increase public awareness of the benefits of good nutrition. Activities will be held under the theme: “Promoting Health through Good Nutrition,” and commence with an official opening on March 14. Additional activities are Talks in Health Centres and Schools on March 15, Sale of Tags and Eating Healthy Day - March 16, Dietary Counseling Day March 17, Half-day Seminar for Diabetics and Hypertensives - March 18.
There will also be a Nutrition Open Day on March 19 and the Publication of Newspaper articles and a presentation on “Totally for Kids” on March 20.
A special feature of the week is Eating Healthy Day when individuals from various departments, schools and health centres will volunteer to eat healthy on that day, as motivation to make more healthy food choices on a daily basis.
Another interesting feature is a Nutrition Open Day at the Newtown Community Centre which takes place on Friday, March 19 and provides information on proper nutrition and healthy foods. There will also be vegetable stalls, the sampling of tasty foods of high nutritional value as well as a video presentation providing nutrition tips.
By means of Nutrition Week, the Ministry of Health is fulfilling its role via the Health Promotion Unit to educate the general public on the many ways in which one can lead a healthier life.
