BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LEADER of the Unity Construct – the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris - told media operatives today (Nov. 25) that this morning’s ruling by the Court to maintain the boundaries injunction and to allow for the hearing of the substantive matter is a victory for the people of St. Christopher and Nevis.
“I believe today the Court found some merit in the arguments that we had advanced, and critically important the Court has stayed any further action by the Governor General in terms of use or otherwise of the Boundaries Commission report. So this is an outstanding victory for us and we are happy that even when the Executive has gone astray that we could still count on the Judiciary to bring the Executive in check. So we won today and we hope that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis would win every day moving forward.”
Cognisant of the fact that all of the grounds upon which they filed their application were not agreed with by the Court, Dr. Harris declared that the success and victory came because the Court has prevented any action from being taken regarding boundary changes.
“You need everything to win; we don’t need to win 11 seats to win the government, we need to win six and the same principle applies. We won fundamentally what we want. We believe that to have proceeded with the boundaries report would have done an injustice to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and we have an opportunity for the Court to hear that substantively at a later date. For now, nothing can happen and the Executive remains stalled in their mad plan, a vicious plan I might add, to undermine the democracy by this government which is illegitimate. That for us is an outstanding victory of which we are pleased and extremely happy…”
Harris – Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Number Seven and Leader of the People’s Labour Party - said that this court battle is part of a “fight for justice and a fight for good governance”.
“In the meantime, the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and the people of the region must call upon the illegitimate government that is operating without constitutional basis to amend its ways, face the Motion of No Confidence, have fresh elections on the boundaries as they are. Let us resolve this abnormalcy and this aberration called a government that we have here that is working not in accordance with the principles long established for Westminster model of democratic government. So, we are happy today. There is only one winner today...it is the people!”
Harris indicated that he does not know when the judicial review would commence but, whenever it does, their lawyers are prepared to continue this “fight for the people”.
