Tuesday, November 26, 2013 - 12:32pm - The Territory’s newest centenarian is Mrs. Venovia Todman who made 100 years old on Sunday, November 24.

Mrs. Todman was born in 1913 to the late Hugh Benjamin-Hodge and Polly Ann Turnbull. She was born in her grandmother’s home in Pleasant Valley which was originally the house and estate of the late Dr. William Thornton, a Virgin Islander from Jost Van Dyke who designed the United States Capitol Building. The mother of three was married to the late Ernest Alfredo Todman and is a member of the Seventh-day Adventist congregation.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE who is currently on official travel in the United Kingdom (UK) attending the Joint Ministerial Council meeting, will visit Ms. Todman at her home in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands upon his return.

Honourable Premier will present her with a cheque compliments the Government and people of the Virgin Islands, a decade old tradition to honour the Territory’s ‘golden citizens’.

In paying tribute to her legacy, Honourable Premier said, “Becoming a centenarian is indeed a privilege and blessing from God, a blessing that many of us would like to experience as we live this life.”

He said like other centenarians, Mrs. Todman would have seen the world change in many ways, shaped not only by technology, globalisation and migration, but also by tragedy, and the lessons of life.

Premier  Smith further stated that Mrs. Todman’s golden milestone is evidence that trust in God, a healthy diet, a high level of care, and support from family and friends are important to living a long, fruitful and productive life.

Mrs. Todman is described by her family as a mother to all and has won several prizes in the past for her crochet pieces in the annual Botanic Garden Art and Craft Exhibition.

The Government of the Virgin Islands is committed to ensuring that the Territory’s senior citizens are recognised for their sterling contribution towards building a better Virgin Islands.
