BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE People's Action Movement (PAM) candidate for Constituency Number Two, Jonel Powell, promised his constituents better representation under a government of National Unity.
In a special Team Unity meeting held last night (Nov. 25) on Central and Market Streets, Powell said that the Representative for Constituency Number Two, Hon. Marcella Liburd, does not care about her constituents and therefore does not know how to properly represent them.
Speaking about his recent stay at the JNF General Hospital for a surgery, Powell said he was fortunate to have the means to seek health care as there are many people in the Federation who do not have that privilege.
Powell bashed the current health care system, stating that is has deteriorated further under the leadership of Liburd, its present Minister.
The Constituency Two Candidate promised the constituents and the Federation a better health care system under a National Unity government.
"I want to make a pledge on behalf of this Unity Team that when the government comes, a government of National Unity, that can't happen anymore because every man, woman and child in this country must have the benefit of health care in this country. Every man, woman and child must be able to go to the hospital and get treatment."
Powell went on to tell the people that he wants a better constituency for them and promised not to be an election time representative.
He told the constituents that he would not just go around and fix their roads when elections are close but put measures in place to ensure they have proper road infrastructure at all times.
"I am not coming when election time comes to pave any roads, because under a government of National Unity you will have a proper infrastructure maintenance programme. Your roads will be paved all the time. We will not be an election time government...we will be a proper government."
Powell said that the only thing the present representative does is paint a number of buildings within the constituency, and he promised the people of Central Basseterre that he would "clean-up" that area.
"And I don't mean clean-up like what she [Liburd] wants to give you all with a public bath...you want running water and a bath in your house. In this day and age, every man, woman and child supposed to have the benefit or running water and a bath in the house where they live. You are not supposed to be coming out by the stand pipe to brush your teeth when night comes. You deserve better than that! And under a government of National Unity we will ensure that there are social programmes in place to deal with that."
Powell said that the playfield in Central Basseterre only looks good on the outside and indicated that the locker rooms are atrocious, while promising to address that issue once he is in government.
He went on to say that Liburd had promised the people of Dorset Village that they would have a proper playground since the last election (2010) but she never delivered on that promise. He said that, once in government, he would give them the playground they deserve.
The Constituency Two Candidate said that not only would he deliver for his people, but the entire Unity Construct would deliver for the Federation.
Powell said that it takes the support of every person to put a government of National Unity in power and, once that is done, the people would be better represented.
"It takes a government of you the people, by you the people, and of you the people to do that. And I mean a government of National Unity.”
