Locally assembled “ECO” costumes anticipated for Children’s Road Parade

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com
Basseterre St Kitts – UNLIKE previous years, the Carnival Committee has ensured that for Sugar Mas 42, all costumes for the hundreds of expected primary school students would be assembled on the shores of St Kitts, rather than having them done overseas.

According to Chairman of the Carnival Committee, Sylvester Anthony, despite the fact that the material for such costumes would still have to be imported, the team has decided to take a better approach to have them assembled in the Federation.

Anthony also revealed that for the 2013 Children’s Parade for Sugar Mas 42, a total of 10 segments for both male and female groups would focus on renewable energy (going green for the environment).

Although there is a $25 admission fee, Anthony said that the committee is expecting a turnout of over 350 children from the primary level to be a part of this year’s parade.

He informed that the Sugar Mas Committee would sponsor the expenses for the parade.

“We did a couple of things differently this year. Our costume was designed and built locally rather than going to Trinidad and we have to send somebody to the twin-island Republic like we did last year,” the Chairman said.

Anthony told SKNVibes that a designated team of local and international designers have been placed in charged for the compilation of the eco-costumes, making it not only cheaper to assemble but keeping the much needed funds in the Federation.

The Committee Chairman said that aside from the designers, the small revellers themselves would play a pivotal role in the construction of their dazzling but eco-friendly costumes.

“We are hoping that this initiative will create more interest among the youths and therefore we can have an increase of kids. And we are trying to make it affordable for parents who might have four or more children,” Anthony declared

He however said that the committee would now venture in ways to have a team of international designers to host a six-week seminar to facilitate school members to teach techniques in the various costume building.

“We hope out of that exercise that we can have two or three costumes coming out as a result of the workshop. But, more importantly, this team of participants will be used to build the costumes for next year’s Carnival,” the Chairman added.
