CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (December 2, 2013) -- The Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis has the mandate to promote development in the country and has been providing solutions to communities around the Federation in a number of areas including the development of sports.
Dr Telbert Glasgow, a Nevis-based Director of the Development Bank observed that the institution rose to the occasion when it was contacted by the Department of Sports in Nevis to sponsor the first ever tape ball cricket tournament which bowled off at the Elquemedo T. Willett Park in Nevis on Thursday November 28.
Speaking at the opening ceremony held at the Elquemedo T. Willett Park, the Director noted that the Development Bank not only provides solutions for communities in terms of their needs for housing, and for capital in business and agriculture, but also provides student loans for those people who want to go abroad to further their talents.
Using sports as a vehicle of development, Dr Glasgow said that the Development Bank ensures that those who are not so academically inclined can also benefit from sporting activities that will give them the opportunity to develop their technical skills which they can showcase for their own benefit and the benefit of the country.
He gave the example of the former West Indies test player, Nevisian Keith Arthurton, who is now based in St. Kitts and who approached the Development Bank to conduct a coaching clinic for young cricketers and the Development Bank responded positively.
A number of players on the St. Kitts cricket scene today are products of that camp, but doing exceedingly well are Akeem Saunders who plays on the St. Kitts national team and was who named to the Leeward Island team this year, and Akheam Fox who at the end of this year’s cricketing season in England was promoted to play in the English Cricket Premier League.
Nevis Island Administration’s Junior Minister for Sports, the Hon Hazel Brandy-Williams, who officially opened the league aptly named Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis Tape Ball Cricket Tournament 2013-2014, said that 12 males’ teams and six female teams had registered to take part in the league.
“It is my dream that someday one of our ladies will make it to the West Indies team,” said the Junior Minister. “It is my dream and I am hoping that this league will set the stage for some young person out there who has that desire to make it beyond our shores and to represent Nevis as far as possible and that is as far as the West Indies team.”
The ceremony was chaired by Mr Curtis Morton, Communication Officer with the Ministry of Sports, and was also addressed by the Acting Director of Sports in the Nevis Island Administration Mr Jamir Claxton. In attendance was Nevis’ Deputy Premier, the Hon Mark Brantley, who faced the first ball from Hon Hazel Brandy-Williams who bowled off the tournament.
