The Dr. Denzil Douglas regime has again shown its insensitivity towards the residents of St. Kitts and Nevis through its approach to the allocated "VAT Reduced Days".
The Dr. Denzil Douglas led Administration has now removed vehicles from the list of items that will be available to residents at a reduced rate of VAT. Persons who have been saving despite these hard economic times towards the purchase of a vehicle at a reduced price have now lost that opportunity thanks to the Dr. Douglas and his cabinet. Residents will now not be able to take advantage of this opportunity as has been the norm in recent years.
“Residents ought not be penalised for the reckless fiscal mismanagement of this illegitimate government,” says Team UNITY Central Bassetere Candidate Jonel Powell.
The vibrant, dynamic, exciting and popular young candidate also expressed concern and echoed the sentiments of the majority of the poor and vulnerable citizens of the country.
The PAM Deputy Leader Powell said “In addition to essentially being penalized for the years of government fiscal irresponsibility the insensitive and illegitimate government of Denzil Douglas has also sought to place the Reduced VAT Days on Thursdays. This results in persons who are paid on weekly basis, typically on Fridays, not being able to take advantage of the reduced VAT. By the time these persons have been paid the opportunity would have passed. This shows a government that has lost touch with the poor and vulnerable of this country. A government that does not understand that the vast majority of people in this country lives paycheck to paycheck and in most cases, especially those weekly minimum wage workers their Friday paycheck is done by Monday and in many cases by the same Friday. The fact that the government will put the VAT discounted days on Thursdays shows a lack of compassion and understanding of the plight of poor people in the federation. ”
Powell called on the Dr. Denzil Douglas led administration to review the VAT days with a view of adapting a more considerate approach to those days for the majority of poor people in the country.
Powell declared,
“TEAM UNITY calls on the Dr. Denzil Douglas led insensitive and illegitimate Government to:
1. Include vehicles as approved items for purchase at reduced VAT rates on the allocated days.
2. Move the allocated days for reduced VAT to Fridays so that more persons, in particular weekly paid workers, may have an opportunity to take advantage of the incentive.
