LPM to Saint Lucian Diaspora - Send More Barrels

Press Release

CASTRIES, St Lucia (Dec 5, 2013) – The Lucian People’s Movement (LPM) is deeply concerned about what it terms the bleakest holiday season in the history of the island and has urged the Saint Lucian diaspora to do a little more for their relatives and friends this Christmas.

According to the LPM, “While some may seek to mask their shame by giving the impression that they are not hurting; the same can’t be said for the vast majority of Saint Lucians back home who are really feeling the crunch of a very bad economy. Therefore, there can be no pretense about the economic plight that the ordinary Saint Lucan citizen is currently facing. Moreover, taking into consideration the difficult road that lies ahead before a full recovery of the Saint Lucian economy can ever be realised, it may well be necessary for the Saint Lucian community abroad to approach this Christmas season as if the island were in the aftermath of Hurricane Tomas or any other natural disaster.”

In years gone by, says the LPM, “Saint Lucia and the wider Caribbean would often look in awe at the need for massive shipments of aid to war-torn, depressed, and struggling African nations. However, while God may have spared us from civil unrest and the historic tribulations of our brothers and sisters in Africa, there is one similarity that is crystal clear—we have now joined them in the need for massive aid in order to feed our people and keep our country afloat.”

Therefore, understanding the perilous economic situation in which our nation has found itself, the LPM makes no apology for its plea that Saint Lucians in the diaspora should attempt to save this Christmas season for thousands of struggling Saint Lucians living on the island.

“Send whatever you can, and if you are able to double up on the barrels, send two instead of one. As Saint Lucians with an undeniable love for your country, you may also choose to make a special donation to a charitable organization in the country. More than ever, our nation is in need of generous patriots who are determined to come to the aid of their countrymen,” the LPM concluded.
