CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – ALKIN HUGGINS of 3A1 emerged winner of the Charlestown Secondary School’s annual Spelling Bee Competition which ended on Friday (Jan. 23) at the school’s auditorium.

Huggins did not have it easy however, and was pressed all the way by class mate Al Flemming who only lost on a count-back. The two sparred with each other for 45 minutes until the announcers ran out of words for them to spell.

With the scores still tied, the judges’ tallied points from the previous rounds and Huggins, who had a perfect record, ended with 56 points to Flemming’s 54. Third place went to Trish Taylor and Chloe Williams.

The competition, which began Wednesday (Jan. 21), was part of the annual English Week observances organised by the school’s English Department.

Other activities included a book drive where used books were donated by parents; visiting authors, including Hansel Manners, Jean Caines and Vanessa Webb; a Film Festival that featured Akila and the Bee; and a fund-raising Refreshments Sale.
