DECEMBER 9th, 2013 -- A contingent of five persons left the island today, December 9th, to represent St Kitts-Nevis at the Junior Achievement Competition of the Year for the Americas Region. Three students representing Basseterre High School, winners of the 2013 Junior Achievement Trade Fair, will showcase their school’s JA company products at the Competition in Cancun Mexico.
Ms Laquasha Sargeant, Sales Manager, Mr Chevaun Matthew, Assistant Treasurer, and Production Manager Mr Maliquiel Boone of All Tingz Nature-Al, the award winning JA Company from the Basseterre High School, were accompanied by their teacher Ms Eunice Liburd and are expected to arrive in Cancun this evening to compete against students from twenty other countries. The delegation is headed by Tracey Herbert, Executive Director of Junior Achievement St Kitts-Nevis.
Their product line featured various wood carved creations including clocks, desk accessories and two exquisite coffee tables. The raw material was sourced from an old fallen tree on the school’s premises. They treated the termite eaten tree and used the natural intricate patterns and formations of nature’s processes to produce one-of-a-kind pieces that wowed the general public and judges alike. Complementing their wooden products were a variety of bags and accessories made of recycled denim and other fabrics.
This makes the second time that Basseterre High School has travelled to COY. Last year, the Washington Archibald High School also qualified and attended.
The major feature of the Competition is the ability of the students to market their products. The teacher chaperone is close by overseeing, but cannot assist the students as the judges and on-lookers access the booth.
In addition to the hours of preparation that the students undergo with their teacher/chaperone before their departure to COY, much of the foundation in their marketing skills are garnered from the training provided during their JA Company Training sessions.
Last year, Mr Max Brisbane of Scavolini Kitchens and DBB Living Design enthusiastically trained the students in the areas of Marketing and customer service skills. This year, the Head of Strategic Planning and Research at TDC, Mr Don Boncamper shared on the subject area, further encouraging the students to look to careers in research, marketing and science, as underrepresented career choices, and much needed fields of pursuit not just in the local but also regional arena.
Junior Achievement St Kitts-Nevis wishes to recognize the sponsor of the Competition of the Year FedEx, who facilitates the travel and accommodation of all the teacher/chaperone and student participants for the Competition. Gratitude is also expressed to the Junior Achievement St Kitts-Nevis platinum sponsors and donors, USAID, CIBC First Caribbean International Bank and the Christophe Harbor Foundation.
