BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 12th 2013 (Inland Revenue Department) – In an effort to achieve the highest levels of performance and productivity, the Office of the Comptroller, with the support of the Ministry of Finance, have conducted a number of training workshops for its staff over the past several months.
The capacity development sessions which were facilitated by Mr. Cosbert Manchester, Executive Director of CM and Associates Consulting Agency, are designed to continue the process of enhancing and transforming the Inland Revenue Department into a world class revenue collection agency.
CM Associates is a local management and technical capacity building firm that specializes in improving staff productivity, communication and management skills, has been collaborating with the Inland Revenue Department in working to develop the technical know-how and competencies of personnel. The ongoing training sessions are focused on practical and theoretical courses, designed to ensure that the staff become more competent and proficient in dealing with their day to day activities and operations.
Many of the units at the Department underwent training in one or more of the following courses:
• Basic Communication Skills – 1 day
• Supervisory Management – 3 days in house & 10 Weeks at UWI
• Advanced Supervisory Management – 12 Weeks at UWI
• Time Management and Work Plan Preparation – 2 days
Training began in October 2013, and courses were held at the Tax Reform Unit’s Conference Room on Cayon Street and at the UWI Open Campus in Basseterre. Courses are expected to conclude in February, 2014. The training program took place daily from 9:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Acting Comptroller of Inland Revenue Department, Mr. Edward Gift, commenting on the rationale and benefits of the training program stated that, “he is confident that when the training is finished, staff members will be better prepared to deal with the challenges of a dynamic tax administration environment”.
He went on to encourage employees to remain fully involved during the courses, and to challenge themselves to learn all that they can, so that at the end of the process, they would all leave with an improved skill set, and a more informed view of best practices in tax administration, customer services, time management and worker productivity.
