Despite the snow and freezing cold weather, an eager and attentive audience of citizens sat for over two hours to hear from the parliamentarians who vow to change the political dispensation of the independent federation.
Mr. Winston Warner chaired the evening's program opening with a word of prayer and a hymn of exultation, "Lead Us Heavenly Lead Us."
Hon. Eugene Hamilton spoke first with pride and passion about his abundant love for his native land, his nation's flag and for what the country's motto challenges all citizen's to do: place country above self. He spoke to the cause for Unity and lauded Dr. Harris and Mr. Condor for the stand they took in parting ways with Dr. Denzil Douglas.
He suggested these Honourable men could have gone their separate ways and leave their nation impoverished, hapless hopeless and helpless but they have chosen instead to unite with a view to welcome a new paradigm in St. Kitts and Nevis: a shift where we are actually coming together as a people and giving our people a chance to be truly empowered.
As part of Team Unity's agenda for national healing and social reconstruction, Hamilton spoke to the fact that the plight of sugar workers was never wholesomely addressed by this current Labour government and that is why he is a strong advocate of initiatives such as venture capital which in part allows locals to determine their economic destiny and have a greater stake in benefiting from the spoils our nation has to offer.
The Consituency #8 Representative spoke with great fervor as to the current passport scandal still fresh on the minds of many citizens who are awaiting an honest explanation from the government as to the diplomatic passport being held by an Iranian national named Alizera Moghadam. Hamilton,”citizens ought not take this matter lightly or else we will awaken one morning only to find ourselves as third class citizens in our native land.
Hamilton spoke about his passion for the opportunities that a Unity initiative will provide with a view to restore a sense of direction for the federation so that young people can become financially independent.
He agreed wholeheartedly that while there ought to be some degree of foreign investment, locals should have a direct stake as well. Hamilton stated that when the Chinese for instance inherit a stake in business whereby they help to stifle the many mom and pop stores once owned by small business owners in rural areas or the capital of either island, government's policies must certainly be revisited as they serve the foreigner and cripples the local man.
Hamilton also spoke with tremendous concern about the nation's women who see the vitriolic way in which politics is played out in our society and the need to make women feel empowered enough to embrace politics at every level. "We must do better in the way we treat our women," Hamilton went on to say.
Hamilton commented briefly on the fact that long before Obama care Kittitians and Nevisians were benefitting from universal healthcare allowing any civil servant from the Prime Minister to the drain sweeper to have access to health care.
As Mr. Hamilton started his presentation so too did he end, reminding citizens that this moment in history must be to live out our country's motto. He suggested that now is the time to put aside our personal agenda and bear in mind that citizens in the Diaspora have a very powerful voice to change things anew in our beloved federation.
