BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HER Majesty’s Loyal Opposition in the Federal Parliament of St. Kitts and Nevis might soon be submitting an amended Motion of No Confidence (MoNC) to include a number of recent infractions that it claims the government has committed.

In an address to the nation, Opposition Leader the Hon. Mark Brantley outlined the basis for the filing of the MoNC, which he explained included the “increasingly-burdensome taxes on the backs of the poor, crippling cost of living and ever-coursing of our public and parliament debate, a trading away of our land and increasing sense of hopelessness and despair amongst our people”.

With the one year anniversary of the filing of the MoNC recently passed, Brantley said the reasons for it has not changed, but the recent Iranian/diplomatic passport issue may have to be added to the list of reasons for the MoNC.

“One year after the filing of the Motion of No Confidence, the reasons for its filing have not changed. Indeed, we may now have to file an amendment to that Motion to include the recent Iranian diplomatic passport sandal and how the Citizenship by Investment Programme is being mismanaged and abused at the expense of the people of this our nation.”

Brantley contends that while under the leadership of Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, St. Kitts and Nevis continues down a path of hardships and growing divisiveness.

“The leadership of Dr. Denzil Douglas over the past 18 years has been marked by ever-increasing hardship for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and greater and greater disrespect by him for members of his own Cabinet, Members of the Opposition and indeed the citizens of this country. St. Kitts and Nevis is now more divided and divisive than ever with no effort being made by the Prime Minister to change his confrontational leadership style which has destroyed the socioeconomic fabric of our once thriving Federation.

“Our nation finds itself at its ebb since Independence and the opposition lays the state of our nation squarely at the feet of the gross mismanagement and incompetence in our Prime Minister in handling the affairs of state.”

The Opposition Leader reminded that despite calls from many local groups and political figures across the region for the MoNC to be expeditiously heard, it has yet to be tabled before the Parliament, and this constitutes a denigration of the democratic societal fabric which categories the Federation.
