BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Sugar Mas 42 Band Clash which was scheduled to take place tonight (Dec. 18) has been postponed until further notice.
Carnival Chairman Sylvester Anthony told this publication yesterday that the much-anticipated event had to be pushed back to a later date, but he did not give a date as to when the competition would be staged.
Anthony said that the postponement is due to a number of issues including uniforms, which the bands had not taken care of as yet.
He also said it was agreed that the Grand Masters Band would not participate in the competition but would instead be one of the judges.
"It was agreed that Grand Masters would not participate and all the other bands agreed to participate. We all agreed at that point that Grand Masters would be one of the judges," he said.
SKNVibes spoke with Leader of the Grand Masters Band, Wingrove Hicks, who explained that the band could not be a part of a competition of that nature due to the type of instruments that are used by its members.
"Our band is a different setting to the other bands, so we would have to go into a different form of band competition. I think we are the only band in the Federation with this setting. We carry wind instruments, aerophones....none of the other bands in the Federation has that form of setting. So we would have to compete with other bands of that nature."
Giving an example, Hicks said a string band could not compete with a steel band, emphasising that Grand Masters would not be able to compete with the other bands in a competition of such nature.
The bands participating in the Sugar Mas 42 Band Clash include the Nu Vybes Band International, Small Axe Band and Kollision Band.
