Work at Warner Park pauses to facilitate Sugar Mill

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WORK on the lighting facility at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium has come to a halt as the venue is being transformed into a cultural complex, dubbed Sugar Mill, which is slated to host all major shows for Sugar Mas’ 42.

Chairman of the Carnival Committee, Sylvester Anthony confirmed that the cultural activities would be hosted at the Cricket Stadium.

“It will be in the Cricket Stadium; the stage has already been built. Sugar Mas’ 40 was held at the Cricket Stadium and Sugar Mas’ 41 was held in the Football Stadium.”

Anthony gave the assurance that the festivities would not be affected by the work which was being done to facilitate the venue with lights.

“Whatever work that was going on in the Cricket Stadium has stopped and the current work there will not be affected by it.”

Senior Sports Officer in the Ministry of Sports, Vernon Springer confirmed that work has indeed paused and that five working days in January would see the completion of the installation of the lights.

“Yes, the work has stopped. We are five days away from completion. The reason why we stopped is that the gust has been an issue and the folks that were contracted to do it said they didn’t want to take that chance.

“In January, once everything goes well, five working days and everything will be completed.”

Some four years ago the Carnival Committee declared that Carnival celebrations had outgrown the Carnival Village and a decision was taken to move the festivities into Warner Park.

Since then, the Sugar Mill has been alternating its location between the Warner Park Football and Cricket Stadiums.

The first event to be held at the Sugar Mill for this year will be the Soca Monarch Finals, which is scheduled for tomorrow night (Dec. 20).
