December 20th, 2013 -- Shanel A. Taylor, daughter of Agnes and Alphonso Taylor, of Westbury Village Nevis, successfully completed her Bar Professional Training Course at the University of Law incorporating the College of Law London, and was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales, this past July, by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple. She holds a Bachelors of Laws, with Honours, from De Montfort University, Leicester United Kingdom.
She excelled greatly in year two of her University degree; Not only did she place first in the law of tort overall, but she ranked in the top ten obtaining an overall first-class average, finally graduating with First –Class Honours in July of 2011. This achievement was well deserved due to her very evident discipline, motivation and dedication to hard work.
Shanel received the outstanding award of attending the International Intensive Course in “User Rights and Market Regulation” at the University of Udine Italy, an achievement earned for placing in the top three best final year students taking Commercial /Consumer law and European Union Law. Her Commercial law Project lent greatly to her receiving a first-class in that module and the receipt of afore-mentioned award. The paper was described by her professor as an “excellent piece of work which is impressively researched and documented.”
Shanel was generous with her time in supporting others and involved herself fully in the life of the law school. She is a trained mentor in the University Scheme and has worked closely in supporting first and second year law students. She was an Organiser for the Bar Project, the Street Law Society (for which she held the position of Treasurer) and the Student Action for Refugees (STAR) project (for which she was a committee member). She received the Rights to Read Award backed by the Leicestershire Education Business Company, for volunteering her time, teaching primary school children how to read.
In 2011, Shanel was richly honoured when she was selected from among hundreds of applicants to be one of the 40 plus finalists to participate in the landmark Black Lawyers Directory, Legal Launch Pad Scheme (making a difference in diversity in the legal profession); a Scheme sponsored by the likes of No 5 Chambers, DLA Piper and Allen & Overy (Magic Circle Firms). She has since gone on to become an active ambassador for the Scheme.
Shanel acknowledges that her journey was not seamless or smooth. More importantly, she gives thanks to God Almighty, the author and finisher of her faith for a dream realised. She is also appreciative of her family and friends who stood in the gap with purity of soul to encourage and support that dream, especially her mother Mrs. Agnes Taylor and her sister Dannel Taylor.
