Big Lice says ‘No Motion No Calypso’

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - DESPITE declaring that he would not be competing in this year’s Senior Calypso Monarch Competition, Duncan ‘Big Lice’ Wattley is expected to release a song that explains the reasons for his non-participation.

The calypsonian of over 30 years stated that he did not compete because the government has defiled the Constitution.

In an interview with SKNVibes, Wattley gave a brief insight as to what the song is about.

“The name of the song is ‘No Motion No Calypso’. It states that I have taken a stance and basically I am speaking why and basically apologise to my fans for not taking part in the competition.

“The song is just for my fans and the people who are accustomed to hear me and have not heard and asking me why I am taking this stance. It’s a nice catchy song.”

Wattley stated that the song is being released because he wishes not to take the spotlight from those who chose to participate in the competition.

“Even though I am boycotting, I did not want to take away from the tent. People chose to sing and I respect that. I am not going to tell people don’t sing, because people have their own reasons why they sing.

“So I did not want to interfere.”

Wattley, who is a Political Science Lecturer at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College, also commented on the state of affairs in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“We are really in a sad state! As I said before, the Constitution is the supreme law of the land and for people to try and find all kind of reasons not to table a motion, to me, it is just a defiance of the Constitution.

“If you are going to set that precedence it means we are going to be in some serious problems, because people want to try and misinterpret deliberately and try and find loop holes around our supreme set of principles and guidelines...we are in a serious time.”

Wattley added that he has other songs he would be releasing in the January.

“I also have the other two songs that I had prepared for Carnival before I decided to boycott. I want to produce a set of songs for the New Year.”

Duncan ‘Big Lice’ Wattley has been a regular finalist in the National Carnival Calypso Monarch Competitions, with his highest position being First Runner-up in 2007.
