Douglas holds no animosity towards Astaphan!

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LEADER of the ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, the Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas holds no personal animosity towards the former Minister of National Security and Parliamentary Representative of Central Basseterre, the Hon. Dwyer Astaphan.

This pronouncement was made last evening (Jan. 29) following Astaphan’s statements and accusations levelled against Dr. Douglas at a recent press conference held at his Port Zante office.

In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary, Erasmus Williams, it said that the Office of the PM is aware of a media conference held by Astaphan and it is Dr. Douglas’ position that in a healthy democracy freedom of speech is a good thing.

“The Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas wishes to reiterate that he holds no personal animosity towards Mr. Astaphan and again wishes him every success in his new private ventures,” the statement reads.

It also noted that the PM had recently approved Astaphan’s appointment as a consultant to the Ministry of Legal Affairs to assist the government in overhauling the nation’s labour laws.

“Dr. Douglas,” it added, “appreciates the overwhelming sentiments of goodwill he has received as he continues to attend to the development of the country. In that regard for example, he met on Wednesday and Thursday with a group of investors who has indicated a serious interest in developing the La Valle project.”

Conclusively, the statement said that Dr. Douglas continues to remain focused on advancing the socio-economic and political interests of the nation.

On Wednesday, January 28, during his press conference, Astaphan called for Dr. Douglas’ resignation as leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“It is my opinion that in the best interests of the government, the Labour Party and the country, the signal should be sent that within three to six months after the next elections Dr. Douglas will step down, then the Party will elect a new leader, and that new leader will be Prime Minister,” Astaphan read from a 14-page document.

Astaphan professed that Dr. Douglas’ leadership has fractured the critical connection between himself and elected members of Cabinet, between Cabinet and party leadership, and between party leadership and party base.

“He has not done justice to the legacy of Labour’s leaders of yesteryear. And were it not for a strong basic fabric, and for the commitment, faithfulness and dedication of a number of persons, the Party could have been in worse shape,” he added.

The former Minister further stated, “In addition, he has all-too-often acted out his rage and vindictiveness on persons who have been faithful to the Labour Party and to making the Labour government do good and look good, persons undeserving of such rage and vindictiveness, while he has given succour to the mediocre, to the mischievous, to the manipulative and to his sycophants. And he has also over the years developed the image of being accommodating towards certain expatriates who act with disdain, and are widely seen as being terribly disadvantageous, towards  the people of this country. These are not the right component parts that make up the face of a leader of a Labour Party and government.”

He called on the nation’s citizens and residents to partner with their candidates to usher in a government reflecting a new mood of national reconciliation, a state in which he insisted there could be no room for Dr. Douglas.
