Roadtown, Tortola - Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Social Development Honourable Dancia Penn, OBE, QC recently toured the construction site of the new Peebles Hospital for a firsthand look at the progress which has been made towards completing that major Government infrastructure development project.

During the visit on Thursday morning the Minister received a guided tour of the various floors of the six-storey building, from the Ministry’s Project Manager Mr. Bennett Smith.

Honourable Penn said she was grateful for the opportunity to examine the progress of work on the new hospital, and described the tour as being extremely enlightening.

“My tour of the hospital construction site was a real eye opener. Now that the partitioning and other work on the inside is progressing, the new hospital is taking shape. The Government is very eager to have this important project completed for the people of this Territory,” the Minister noted.

While at the new Peebles Hospital construction site, the Minister also interacted with several of the site supervisors and received updates on their respective areas of focus on the project.

The Minister was accompanied by a number of senior ministry officials who included the acting Permanent Secretary Mrs. Petrona N. Davies, Private Secretary to the Minister Mrs. Betty Chalwell-Bailey, and Finance and Planning Officer Mr. Anthony McMaster.

Government signed a US$63.9 million contract in January 2007 with the company Mirsand-Carimex-Quantum for the construction of the new Peebles Hospital. Work on the project, which is being supervised by the Ministry, commenced in March 2007 and under the contract was to have been completed in September 2008. It is now estimated that the project will be completed later this year.
