Victor Sams "Singer, Composer, djembe/ngoni player & teacher" visits St. Kitts and Nevis for Sugar Mas 42

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 2013 -Victor Sams was born on St. Eustatius, Dutch West Indies, Caribbean. An area with a strong African musical influence, brought by slaves from Africa. Caribbean music is mostly all African rhythm. Lifestyle and circumstances have this music in the Caribbean formed into something quite idiosyncratic. St Eustatius is surrounded by a few islands, St. Kitts-Nevis, Antigua and Guadeloupe to name a few. All with a strong distinct rhythmic influence. Sams has not started playing drums at a young age.

     

    His parents were strictly religious and regarded all forms of rhythmic music as devil music. A term that was imposed on the slaves because the rituals that they used in the worship of the gods what they believed. Sams interest and inspiration for music he has inherited two major rhythmic masters of his island. Peter John Lijfrock was a kettle drummer.     After many trips to West Africa to study with djembe masters, Famoudou Konate in Guinea, Mali and Amoudou Doumbia Fadoua O'lare in Guinea, he has seven years as a djembe teacher taught at several music schools of North Holland, Gerard Boedijn in Hoorn Heemskerk music, music Waterland in Purmerend, ACKV in Alkmaar, music Beverwijk.
