BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Traffic Department of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is warning motorists that should they fail to comply with rules and regulations implemented, specifically for the Sugar Mas’ 42 street activities, penalties would be imposed.
Head of the Traffic Department Inspector Carl Caines told SKNVibes that the prescribed routes for today’s Children’s Carnival, Wednesday’s Grand Parade and Thursday’s Las’ Lap Jam would be closed to vehicular traffic from 11:00 a.m. on each day and parking in those areas is strictly prohibited.
The Inspector explained that the route for this afternoon’s event, which commences at the Patsy Allers Play Field, is east along Cayon Street, down Church Street onto Liverpool Row and into Cayon Street Ghaut, east along the Bay Road, up Fort Street and into Warner Park.
And for the other street activities, which would also begin at the Pasty Allers Play Field, east along Cayon Street, down West Independence Square Street, east along South Independence Square Street, up East Independence Square Street, east along Pond Road, down Sandown Road and west along the Bay Road.
According to the Inspector, a towing company has been contracted by the Licencing Authority in the event that its services are needed, and vehicles parked along the parade route, would be towed and their owners/drivers would be ticketed.
He added that the vehicles would not be returned to the owners until the towing fees have been paid.
A motorist found in violation could pay up to $300 for their disobedience; $100 for the ticket and between $100 and $200 for the towing service (depending on the size of the vehicle).
Signs directing the flow of traffic, restricting parking etc. would be placed across Basseterre and Caines said if they are not obeyed ticketing would occur.
In an appeal to both motorists and pedestrians, Caines asked that each group be both vigilant and cautious, especially with the increased activities which are expected on the streets.
“I am entreating drivers to be very patient, especially during this time of the year, and pedestrians should be careful and cautious at all times when using the Federation’s roadways because vehicles would be back and forth and, of course, the troupes and the bands and the tractors would be on the road and they are likely to be injured if caught in the path of a vehicle...”
