ST JOHN'S, Antigua – Following a week-long investigation into the shooting death of Australian yachtsman Drew Golan, an Antiguan youth has been arrested and charged on suspicion of murder in relation to the incident.

According to news coming from that country, Sylvester Lindsey, 21, was accused over the weekend of the tourist’s murder and is expected to appear before the High Court of Antigua and Barbuda today (Feb. 2). The reports also stated that Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Bennett indicated that a .32 calibre pistol which is presumed to have been used in the shooting incident had also been seized.

According to police authorities, three individuals are currently being held for questioning and investigations into the English Harbour killing are ongoing.

Gollan was shot dead in the English Harbour area on January 22 when a masked assailant attacked him, his girlfriend and their toddler. The family was returning to their yacht after having dinner nearby. The female and child were not hurt during the attack. Police surmised that robbery was the motive for the attack.

Since then, a number of yacht operators have fled the island and many have threatened to leave if security in the English Harbour vicinity does not improve.

Australian High Commissioner to the Eastern Caribbean, Philip Kentwell however indicated that his country has no intention of issuing a travel advisory against Antigua, but stressed the importance of making clear the risks that tourists may be exposed to when travelling to the region.

Golan’s death follows the double homicide of British couple Ben and Catherine Mullany who had been visiting the island on their honeymoon in July of 2008.
