Hospitalised wanted man alleges police brutality

Anthony ‘Muchoo’ Hendricks
By: Sharlene Martin, SKNVibes

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A man, who was listed as wanted and was recently shot by the police in Nevis, is a patient at the Alexandra Hospital and is alleging that he was brutalised by two law enforcement officers.

Anthony ‘Muchoo’ Hendricks of Main Street, Charlestown was shot six times in his leg and groin around 1:00 a.m. on Thursday (Jan. 29) while on Craddock Road, Nevis.

Hendricks told SKNVibes that he was walking along Craddock Road after taking his girlfriend home when he saw two police officers. He said one of them shouted, “See him there?” but he paid them no mind because he knew they could not have been referring to him.

The patient said he heard gunshots a few minutes later and realised he had been shot in his right leg, above his ankle. Hendricks said he ran into the back of a nearby yard and saw blood “spouting from my foot as if a water pipe got burst”.

Hendricks said after a while he returned to the front of the yard and was sitting on the landing when he saw the officers jumping the fence and coming at him. He claimed that the officers attacked him and shot him five more times in his right leg and groin. He also said the officers physically assaulted him before taking him to the hospital.

Officer in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department in Nevis, Inspector Brandy, told SKNVibes that a warrant was in existence for the arrest of Hendricks. He is on a burglary charge.

According to the Inspector, Hendicks was confronted by police and he resisted arrest. This resulted in a struggle during which “Muchoo” was shot several times and later taken to the hospital where he is being treated.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
