Garden Hotspurs cruising after hammering Strikers

Garden Hotspurs celebrating first goal

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TWO goals from Rovan Wigley  helped Hobson Enterprises Garden Hotspurs stay at the top of the Premier League as his team hammered St. Thomas/Trinity Strikers 4-0 in an encounter at Warner Park on Sunday (Jan. 19).

Spurs had an opportunity to maintain their spot at the summit and made the vital breakthrough in the 13th minute when Shaquille Adams converted a free kick from a tight angle to beat the keeper in the top right corner.

Strikers however failed to create any chances to test Spurs’ goalkeeper who enjoyed a very comfortable afternoon.

Wigley then doubled Spurs’ advantage in the 18th minute when he found himself with acres of space in the penalty area and brilliantly finished to dampen Strikers’ spirits.

Twenty-three minutes later, Carlos Bertie added a third for Spurs with a simple tap in just before the halftime interval.

In the second half, Wigley struck again to put the match beyond Strikers’ reach with a running shot to maintain their four-point lead in the Premier League standings.

Earlier in the day, Zahyah Isaac led Harris Paint St. Peters in a second half 3-0 demolition of SPD United.

Both teams had carved out some good chances in the first half but they failed to capitalise on opportunities that were presented.

In the second half however, St. Peters turned up the tempo on SPD, which led to the opening goal by Kirkland Harris who finished brilliantly just inside the penalty area to break the stalemate in the 56th minute.

Isaac then added a second goal for St. Peter’s with and easy finish in the 18-yard box.

He thereafter followed up with his second and the team’s third goal after getting behind the SPD defenders and cheekily beating the onrushing goalkeeper only to stop the ball just before crossing the goal-line. He then got on his knees and headed the ball into the back of the net providing some amusement to the crowd who was in awe of his strange style of play.

Also on Sunday evening, defending champions Island Auto Kactus Conaree FC hammered Mantab FC 4-1 to keep their tabs on leaders Garden Hotspurs.

Conaree begun the game brightly and broke the deadlock in the 30th minute through Wazim Howe, who thumped the ball in the back of the net with the goalkeeper off his line.

Mantab could have done little to prevent the second goal in the 36th minute which came as a result of a stunner by Sylvester Samuel, whose shot from the right left the goalkeeper helpless in his efforts.

The second half saw Mantab seeking a route back into the game, and they were successful with a simple tap in by Kyrae Jarvis in the 63rd minute after his colleague Carl Tuitt created the opportunity from the left wing to find him in six yard box for the easy finish.

Try as they may, the game got out of Mantab’s reach when a brilliant counter attack in the 76th minute left Kadeem Lewis one-on-one with the goalkeeper who fell to the ground leaving Lewis with the gapping goal and he made no mistake.

Lewis then took off the boot which scored the goal and ran over to a corner flag and started to dance with it in his hand.

The defending champions then added a fourth through Justin Codrington just before the final whistle to cement their second place position.

    On Saturday S. L. Horsford’s St. Paul’s United defeated KFC Trinity/Challengers United in a one-sided encounter.

Attis Hughes struck twice in the 40th and 75th minute for St. Paul’s, while the third goal came from an own goal in the 56th minute by Trevon James of KFC Trinity/Challengers.

On that same day there was a titanic clash between RAM’s Village Superstars and Winners Circle Newtown United.

The game started brightly with both teams trading early punches, but the deadlock was broken when a defensive error gifted Kimaree Rogers the opener in the 25th minute, quieting a large cross-section of the crowd.

A very flat looking Winners Circle team was then punished for a second time due to a Lionel Morson strike in the 54th minute, adding to the misery of the Newtown supporters.

And to add insult to injury, Zevon Archibald missed a penalty for Winners Circle Newtown United in the 90th minute.
