PM calls on media to assist in fighting crime

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PRIME MINISTER Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas is beseeching the St. Kitts-Nevis media to assist in the fight against crime by tapping into its creativity reserve and paint the world of work so as to make it appealing to those who seem to have no interest in positive things.

At the most recent of his monthly press conferences, PM Douglas spoke of a new government initiative, a youth empowerment project, which is to complement existing crime fighting strategies.

He reminded, however, that government “cannot win the battle against crime alone” and suggested that because the youth are in tune with the media, its members should somehow steer youths towards “positive paths”.

“...the government cannot win the battle against crime alone. There are many young people who are not interested in work. There are many young people who are not interested in much of anything that’s constructive, but they listen to your radio stations, they read your newspapers, they log on to your own websites. I urge therefore every single member of the media to find imaginative, upbeat, convincing way to encourage them to try more positive paths and to take advantage of programmes like YES.”

PM Douglas said the media’s involvement would benefit all aspects of society.

“This is not something you will be doing for the government or for any political party.  Crime, I wish to remind you, is no respecter of persons. I urge everyone in the media to find unique ways to make hard work and straight living seem appealing. I urge you to make it look cool, even macho if possible.”
